Welcome to Bute Sons & Daughters

Like much of Western & Highland Scotland the Island of Bute has witnessed the gradual depletion of its population to the current level of around 7000. Now, instead of a large island population we have a massive off-island population, many of whom still like to keep in touch with their spiritual homeland.

The Bute Sons & Daughters project aims to develop Bute's genealogy strands, not only in terms of family histories but also our local heritage. Within these pages we have compiled some interesting articles, facts and anecdotes gathered from various sources on the island, including members of Bute's population. Some of this information will stir nostalgic memories of bygone Bute and some may help budding genealogists in their quest for family roots.

New Documents for Members - by Webmaster
Well, a happy and healthy 2008 to all our website visitors, forum users, and Family History Society members. We hope 2008 will bring great progress in compiling your family history, and a lot of fun and happiness too.

For our Family History Society members there are some New Year goodies in the members area today.

First there are 3 new documents from Mike Morrison for the 1914-1919 period: Roll of Honour of the 4th Highland (Mountain) Brigade, A Nominal Roll of Commissioned Officers of the 4th Highland Mountain Brigade, and A Nominal Roll of the Warrant Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and Men of the 4th Highland (Mountain) Brigade.

Also published today is the fourth issue of our Family History Society newsletter, "The Islander". Our tremendous editor Jim Miller has now completed the first year of publication and every issue has not only been produced on time but has been packed with interesting and varied information.

New Document for Members - by Webmaster
A new document listing the headstone inscriptions from the Chapel of St Mary Cemetery is now available in the members area.

Inscriptions from the headstones in the graveyard at the Chapel of St Mary, Rothesay. Details have been transcribed from the publication "Bute & Arran Monumental Inscriptions", which was published by The Scottish Genealogy Society in 1997. Many of these stones are no longer standing or legible, but if any member would like us to take a photo of a particular stone, we will be pleased to do so on their behalf. Search the document by clicking on the Binoculars icon on the left of the page and enter the appropriate
name.
